Why investing in security at your home is important.

Securing your home should be on top of your priority list, not only to protect you and your family but adding security systems to your property can potentially increase the value of your property.

Here are a few tips to take into consideration when securing your home, whether you are at home or planning a getaway:

  1. Lock your doors and windows: Make sure all your doors and windows are locked when you leave your home or go to bed.
  2. Install a security system: Consider installing a security system with cameras and alarms, this can deter intruders and provide you with eyes and ears around your home.
  3. Test your security system before when planning a getaway: Ensure that you contact your security company to let them know you are testing and do not leave this step to the last minute and provide yourself with enough time to fix anything if needed.
  4. Set a timer on a light switch: Minimise the risk of being targeted for theft and break-ins when planning a getaway. Setting a timer on a light that will enable the light to go on during the night time to provide strangers with an illusion that your home is occupied.

Why having no trespassing sign is a must!

The Department of Justice and Correctional Services has drafted a statement to replace the Trespass Act which will prohibit unlawful entry on premises:

  1. Property owners need to give notice by either putting up clear signage or giving an oral warning to the perpetrator - that indicates that entry is prohibited.
  2. If somebody unlawfully gains access to an enclosed property without permission from the property owner are found guilty of an offence.
  3. Trespassers can defend against the charge if there is a reasonable belief that they have title or interest on the premises that entitles them to enter.
  4. It is presumed that access to the door of the property is not prohibited if you've provided the means to access it.

To summarise, having a "no trespassing" sign on your property becomes highly important for legal protection.  A "no trespassing" sign provides you with the ability to prosecute anyone who enters your property without your permission. Without a sign, it may be difficult to prove that someone was trespassing on your property.
